Andrews Labor Government Sick Pay Guarantee For Casual Workers

Victorians who work in casual or other insecure jobs will no longer be forced to choose between a day’s pay and looking after their health, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government’s Victorian Sick Pay Guarantee.

The scheme is the first of its kind anywhere in Australia and provides security to vulnerable workers who are sick or need to care for loved ones.

The guarantee provides casual and contract workers in certain occupations up to five days a year of sick or carer's pay at the national minimum wage.

Occupations included in the scheme are:

  • Hospitality workers
  • Food trades workers (including chefs and kitchen hands)
  • Supermarket and supply chain workers
  • Retail and sales assistants
  • Aged and disability care workers
  • Cleaners and laundry workers
  • Security guards.

To qualify for the guarantee, you need to be a casual employee or self-employed with no other employees in one of the above industries and fulfill the following criteria

  • Over 15 years of age
  • Not be entitled to paid, sick or carers leave in any of your jobs
  • Work physically in Victoria (you can live outside the state)
  • Work at least 7.6 hours per week on average.
